Relentless Ruby

Week 3 left me feeling a bit frustrated. I found myself relying a lot on Google and not much on my own knowledge, which might not be a bad thing as I’m still learning at the end of the day, but certainly put a dampener on my spirits.

Week 3 was spent finishing the remainder of the chapters from the Ruby mastery portion of the pre-course. The difficulty of these challenges definitely ramped up from chapter 5 onwards. That being said, despite my reliance on Google, the time I spent on on trying to get my head around the challenges did help me get a bit more familiar with Hashes, Arrays and Methods.

This week is the final week of the pre-course and we’re almost finished. And as much as I was frustrated with Weeks 2&3, the exercises tasked for this week have been a challenge, but a lot more of using what I know hand in hand with resources. The time and energy I put into last week has definitely helped. The only issue I am encountering at the moment is time management. I underestimated the volume of work I have to get done this week, which is an issue as I really wanted to be done by Friday to enjoy the weekend before the intensity of the course turns up to 11 (so I am told by my mentor).

In my last post I spoke about how important it was to reach out to fellow students and I must admit I haven’t taken that to heart, partly because when I hit a brick wall it is well into the evening and I don’t think anyone is around. Perhaps I should spend some time looking at identifying issues I may encounter soon rather than later. But I will mention something that has helped me this week — exercise. I’ve found running can be really enjoyable for venting frustrations, it really has helped clearing the brain fog after finding myself in a programming pickle.

With a few more days to go and a self-imposed deadline, I really need to crack on with what I have left.

Wish me luck!
